It's always refreshing to see good discussion on the big picture. Fred Wilson started this thread sharing his social media vision.

"every single human being posting their thoughts and experiences in any number of ways to the Internet."

This vision is brilliant in it's simplicity but it's a big shift in the grand scheme of human expression. I am sure there will be enough theories on how far reaching change this simple transformation will bring. We are in first inning here. We have seen the impact of social media on main stream media, we are yet to see that play out on other sectors such education, business (B2B or Enterprise 2.0?) and health.

Blogging 1.0 is almost complete and we are going through the birthing process of micro-blogging. Between these two spectrum, there are many forms and shapes of expression tools.

This vision is a long march but there are some interesting opportunities in near future. If you belong to entrepreneurial camp, then there are interesting problems to work on. Let me explain that by expanding on this social media pyramid shared by Don Dodge:

We keep hearing about this 1-10-100 ratio. This supply chain of content gets into action when that lone creator starts the thread. Since this ratio doesn't really translate into any actionable imagery I started calling this submit-to-scroll ratio. Submit-to-scroll ratio is really a contributer-to-lurker ratio. Reason I prefer this terminology as this helps in thinking more about Submit contexts. Slapping Submit sticker in every possible interface we can significantly increase number of creators.

By doing that we can expand Don's pyramid chart to this possibility:

By just focusing on creating more contexts for new users to hit submit button, we can expedite our march towards a fully participatory media.

Social media tools are still lacking when it comes to inviting new social media users. I don't have handy numbers but my guess is that lot of people who moved from Twitter were already familiar with blogging. Big opportunity lies in letting new users join social media way of expressing. When we started MessageDance, our vision was to focus on users who are very comfortable with email as an authoring tool. Extending email content into social networks, blogs and twitter is what we ended up doing. It feels good when users praise our effort for letting them use most well known Submit button!

If you want to add to social media revolution, think about contexts where we can invite new creators. New interfaces for allowing them to hit Submit button. It still amazes me to see many talented people not blogging due to all sorts of silly reasons. Behavior change will happen with the help of new interfaces.

This vision of social media where every online user is creating something is a major shift. We are lucky to be participating in this migration.

Blogged with MessageDance using Gmail | Reply On Twitter

Trying to understand evolving signals around silent web. Web which we users leave behind when we share our profile data, friends information and information related to transactional experience. I think something significant is just around the corner. These signals are coming up in memes such as Implicit Web, Atomization of conversations, Interface for telling and news feeds.

First the idea of Implicit Web, which is a fancy name for a model where systems and online services act on your digital information without explicitly asking for your interaction. Josh Kopelman, First Round VC, has really amplified core ideas of Implicit Web. He used simple use case to demonstrate how systems are now silently working on our data and creating opportunities for smart orchestrations.

As people spend more time online and perform more of their activities online, they create a lot of data about themselves online. Netflix knows what movies I watch and like. Apple knows what music I purchase and listen to. Amazon knows what books I purchase and like. Evite knows what events/parties I’m going to. Tivo knows what TV shows I like. Opentable knows where I like to eat. Fandango knows what movies I go to. Ticketmaster knows what shows I’ve seen.

Implicit Web trend received unanimous nod at recent Churchill Club discussion -

Today your permanent record exists; you create a trail of data exhaust, digital bread crumbs. Implicit data that exists in silence. Movie rentals, restaurant reservations, books purchased, Web sites visited, etc. All of this data existed in silence. No easy way until now to benefit from the data; but the silos are coming down. Google, Yahoo, Facebook, Mozilla collecting data. Trend is that big wave will come to companies that are able to novel and new ways to deliver information by crossing these silos, with implicit data on the Internet. Use social networking data to improve search. Conversion of data exhaust will create value in new and interesting ways

Later on Josh expanded on Implicit Web theme by giving examples of “atomization of conversation” meme.

Why call someone and tell them you're coming to town? They've seen it on Dopplr.

Want to tell someone about your recent trip to England? Don't bother, they've seen the pictures on Flickr.

No need to call me and ask whether the new movie I just saw is any good — you've seen my review on Flickster.

Want to know what music I'm listening to right now? — check out iLike.

Is someone you know suffering from an illness or injury? — stay connected and informed (and offer support) at their Carepage.

Did your friend just open a bottle of wine? You can stay up to date on what they like (and don't) by following their CellarTracker reviews.

And if that didn't cover it, don't worry, you probably saw it in my Facebook Status updates or Twitter feed.

Online services leveraging user information and then feeding value-addition back in user's social context is what results in atomization of conversations. Status distribution in lifestreaming format but all acting on the data pool of implicit web. User A saying to User B, just give me your feed and I will know what you are up to!

There are two ends to this. Machine enhanced conversations consumed by my social network and my own intent as smartly captured by new tools.

This discrete transformation of our intent is what is really interesting. Though this drags us into semantic territory. Beauty of this transformation is that it's riding on our natural motivations (What are you doing?) and does not require major format/tag surgery. It's happening right now under the banner of 140 constraint in Twitter, search-for-interestingness motivation for picture tagging in Flickr or SEO motivation to make sure that the gist of your expression is captured in your blog post title. There are many more examples like that.

What has really expedited the trend towards atomization of conversation is this new input interface, which is greatly influenced by mobile handset constraints.

Interface of constraint, which Cliff Gerrish calls it Interface for telling, is where we are going to see Implicit Web getting most of it’s innovation. I think Cliff's description is by far the best one I have seen in recent time. This new interface of constraint is really the one which is ensuring best capturing of intent at the entry point. Commonplace expressions like "this restaurant sucks" released from iPhone triggers a chain of event and engages my complete social network. My friends get to see my expression in different contexts - Facebook news feed, Yelp restaurant review, Twitter status, picture in MessageDance so on and so forth.

Interface of constraint is the starting point of implicit web and this constraint is a business rule which translates user's intent in a flurry of conversations. This is a very significant development and this puts systems like Twitter at the center of next generation computing architecture. As Adam Green , CEO of Grazr, puts it Twitter is the IBM punchcard of the 21st century.

Implicit web, atomization of conversations, interface for telling and constraint-based read/write designs are all linked. Apply this new understanding in every social applications out there and you will see opportunity for refactoring lot of existing designs, I think that's where you will see, in next 2-3 years, many new startups to come in and create new values. That's where entrepreneurs step in

Blogged with MessageDance using Gmail | Reply On Twitter

Now that Google has launched Friend Connect, we’ve had a chance to evaluate the technology. We’ve found that it redistributes user information from Facebook to other developers without users’ knowledge, which doesn’t respect the privacy standards our users have come to expect and is a violation of our Terms of Service. Just as we’ve been forced to do for other applications that redistribute data in a way users might not expect or understand, we’ve had to suspend Friend Connect’s access to Facebook user information until it comes into compliance.
I have been following recent announcements in this context. It's time for these platform vendors to read Twitter tea leaves (or tweets! ). That's where we are going to see truly open platform in action.

Facebook and Myspace are extremely busy in wooing developers. Yesterday Facebook announced changes in Profile display and API support. Today Myspace came out with a significantly expanded approach to data sharing. Or as they are calling it Data Availability. Myspace also formally joined Data Portability group.

Let's understand full significance of this announcement from developer's point of view. Here is a full press release (thanks to Silicon Alley Insider!)

LOS ANGELES—May 8, 2008—MySpace, the world’s most popular social network, alongside Yahoo!, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter, today announced the launch of the MySpace ‘Data Availability’ initiative, a ground-breaking offering to empower the global MySpace community to share their public profile data to websites of their choice throughout the Internet. Today’s announcement throws open the doors to traditionally closed networks by putting users in the driver’s seat of their data and Web identity. The launch of the Data Availability initiative marks the first time that a social Website has enabled its community to dynamically share public profile information with other sites.

“The walls around the garden are coming down—the implementation of Data Availability injects a new layer of social activity and creates a more dynamic Internet,” said Chris DeWolfe, CEO and co-founder of MySpace. “We, alongside our Data Availability launch partners, are pioneering a new way for the global community to integrate their social experiences Web-wide.”

Data Availability—User Interface

Data Availability pioneers a new way for users to dynamically share their user generated content and data with websites of their choosing. The Data Availability initiative is founded first and foremost on the simple and comprehensive user control of their own content and data—users will have control over what information they share and who they share it with. Additionally, rather than updating information across the Web (eg. default photo, favorite movies or music) for each site where a user spends time, now a user can update their profile in one place and dynamically share that information with the other sites they care about. MySpace will be rolling out a centralized location within the site that allows users to manage how their content and data is made available to third party sites they have chosen to engage with.

Inside this opt-in framework, they will be offered the opportunity to share their MySpace profiles with the site they are visiting. MySpace, and its landmark launch partners, will be allowing users to dynamically share the content and data of their choosing including: (1) Publicly available basic profile information, (2) MySpace photos, (3) MySpaceTV videos, and (4) friend networks. Integration of the Data Availability project will roll to MySpace users and participating Websites in the coming weeks.

“The launch of Data Availability is an unprecedented move to further socialize the Web and empower users to control their online content and data,” said Amit Kapur, Chief Operating Officer, MySpace. “We are thrilled to begin this initiative with a world class suite of landmark partners and invite websites around the world to participate.”

Partner Website Functionality

Data Availability is about enriching existing Internet destinations with social functionality and valuable pre-existing user generated content and data. By empowering users with the ability to dynamically share, those destinations will create deeper levels of social engagement and new functionality throughout their site. As the online home to 117 million users

To ease implementation for participating sites, the MySpace Data Availability initiative uses OAUTH and Restful APIs as its core technology underpinnings. MySpace is using open standards in an effort to embrace the open source community and allow the implementation to be as non-proprietary as possible. Today’s announcement is the first step of MySpace’s larger data portability initiatives coming down the pipeline. MySpace is officially joining the Data Portability Project demonstrating our continued commitment to openness and open standards.

Data Availability on Yahoo!

MySpace’s Data Availability complements Yahoo!’s recently announced Yahoo! Open Strategy (Y!OS), a company-wide initiative to open Yahoo! to application developers, unlock the rich social connections across the Yahoo! network, and enable users to customize and make more personally relevant their experiences of Yahoo! and other Internet services.

On Yahoo!, the Data Availability initiative may appear to users in a variety of ways. For example, users that have chosen to share their MySpace content and data with Yahoo! Instant Messenger might find their MySpace default photo, interests, and favorite music displayed to their Messenger contacts directly in the IM client. Additionally, MySpace users will be able to choose to display their data within Yahoo!’s universal profile or leverage it in Yahoo! Mail's smarter inbox, once those upcoming releases are deployed.

“Yahoo! believes in an open Internet that gives users the flexibility to make their Web experiences as relevant, social and personalized as they can. As a longtime collaborator with MySpace on a variety of projects, including the OpenSocial Foundation, we’re thrilled to support this new initiative,” said Ash Patel, Executive Vice President, Platforms, at Yahoo!. “The Yahoo! Open Strategy and MySpace Data Availability are a giant leap towards a more social and open Internet.”

Data Availability on eBay

Through the MySpace Data Availability implementation, eBay profiles can be easily enhanced with MySpace bios, interests, pictures, and videos. In a socially driven marketplace, this will yield a deeper connection between individuals. When browsing or transacting on eBay, the availability of external social information can help users make good decisions quickly about whom they can do business with, and perhaps even make a new friend.

"The MySpace Data Availability initiative will further enrich eBay profiles and create a more elaborate social experience for buyers and sellers worldwide," said Matt Ackley, VP of Internet Marketing of eBay. "As the world's largest social commerce site, eBay is dedicated to creating a social context and personality for the people with whom you transact."

Data Availability on Photobucket

MySpace's Data Availability initiative will allow Photobucket users to enjoy a more seamless photo experience with their MySpace profile. Photobucket users will be able to have a single view of their photos across multiple services, as well as opt-in to displaying their MySpace profile data in their Photobucket albums. Users will also be able to leverage their existing connections on MySpace to share their content on Photobucket more easily, without having to re-establish connections and friend lists.

"MySpace users invest a huge amount of time populating their profile and personal interest data. With the large overlap in users, the Data Availability initiative will allow Photobucket to utilize this profile data to enhance its own products," said Alex Welch, President of Photobucket. "The combination of the Data Availability initiative and the recently announced Photobucket Open-API provides new opportunities to create a more open web"

Data Availability on Twitter

Twitter profiles at present are primarily focused on current updates and are relatively sparse on user information. The MySpace Data Availability initiative enriches the current Twitter profile by empowering users to incorporate their MySpace profile content and data points previously not included in the Twitter product suite. Once the implementation is complete, a user will be able to bring in their MySpace content and data including their bio, blogs, and photos, ultimately making the Twitter site a more enriching site with content previously unavailable in its interface.

"Finding friends to follow is central to Twitter's value as a real-time communication utility." Says Biz Stone, Co-founder, Twitter. "This project enhances discovery and connectivity making Twitter more relevant and useful—we're very excited." worldwide, this groundbreaking initiative enables the larger Web to leverage the highly engaged and passionate MySpace global community.

So there you have it, in a nutshell category 5 marketing announcement. If implemented in full spirit (as claimed ) this will let developers (like MessageDance) focus on higher level user interactions and not worry about data requests. Myspace is a leader in social networking space and by picking leading players in email/IM (Yahoo), photo (Photobucket), commerce (Ebay), presence/micro-blogging (Twitter), they are laying down blueprints for the next generation social applications.

I have talked about Experience Graph in the past and I strongly believe Myspace will be pursuing experience graph strategy as against Facebook's plan to mine social graph. Both have merit and it's way too early in the post-social-network phase to declare who will come out as a winner.

For developers like MessageDance, this is a great announcement.

Still remember the day when I was telling folks how Twitter will one day do the job of Reuters. Looks like we are getting closer to that possibility. Adam Pasick, not surprisingly on Reuter blog, is using this little incident to illustrate how Twitter is now the starting point for lot of breaking news:

At about 1:37 pm, software developer Dave Winer asked the Twitterverse: “Explosion in Falls Church, VA?” (Perhaps not coincidentally, Winer is a well-known blogger and podcasting evangelist). A flurry of posts, or “tweets,” followed, as users reported rumbles as far away as Alexandria.

The mainstream media entered the fray at 2:33 pm, with radio station WTOP reporting ground rumblings throughout Northern Virginia, citing a possible earthquake. Officials also told the radio station that the rumblings were part of construction blasts at nearby Ft. Belvoir, which had been scheduled for later in the afternoon as part of a new building for the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency.

Twitter users continued to pile on, pointing out data from the Maryland Geological Survey and adding their own commentary. Twitterer DataG wrote: “After the ‘Falls Church explosion’ event that was covered on Twitter, I saw the value in having a Twitter account at-the-ready.”

To me this is just the beginning. Real big deal is in tying this 140-character breaking news tweet into self-correcting, self-propagating news channel.

Think about all the nice little tools developed around Twitter ecosystem (including MessageDance ). What if some of those tools collaborate on news alert, news validation, correction, updates, orchestration with organizations impacted by this news etc. It's not that difficult to build as most of the pieces are already in place. For the first time we have a real possibility of truly open newswire, which can be automated to a great extent and which can leverage plenty of crowdsourcing tools available out there.

For example in Adam's example, there can be tools which can periodically scan Twitter feeds to automatically figure out what kind of explosion this was? If oil tanker exploded then send alerts to Oil hazard related agencies so and so forth.

Possibilities!

Update: It’s a sad day as thousands of people are dead in huge Earthquake in China. My condolences to those affected by this natural tragedy. There is not much we can do in the face of natural disasters. Technology can help in recovery process. That’s where I believe Twitter has a big role to play. Since I made this post, few people complained that Twitter is all hype and can never be a serious news breaking platform. This tragic incidence proves that Twitter can be used an universal helpline.

Scoble and Danny Sullivan both cover this development and have verified that Twitter was indeed used as a primary news distribution outlet for this tragic news. If lives can be repaired with one extra tool then let’s help spread that idea. Scoble did an outstanding job in tirelessly evangelizing this.

Last couple of days, I have been explaining to many people how Twitter’s open architecture changes the game. I blogged about API users providing shared experience here. Not to miss out on this, we went all out in building Twitter support in MessageDance. Yes offline tweet support included!

Couple of days back, Eric at VentureBeat, reviewed MessageDance. He perceptively describes MessageDance distributed messaging system, and how it overlaps and extends Twitter’s innovation.

Today Matt introduced Prologue, GPL licensed theme-based group twittering hack. Smart move on Matt’s part, as Twitter has the potential to shake the blogging platform at it’s core. It’s as much a defensive move as it’s a respect towards growing Twitter adoption.

Cloud computing is all about shared responsibility! API based development model is declarative syntax of cooperative spirit. You share services, you share the burden of keeping alive underlying user experience as well.

Twitter ecosystem is a best example of that model and if you want to see the future of software development then just follow Twitter. Robust API, hundreds of clients, open attitude (as against open source - too many colors there!) and in general good karma. All people talk about is the lack of stability in Twitter infrastructure, but bigger story around extensive third party application support. Are we seeing next generation infrastructure in the way Twitter is evolving? Shaky, error-prone in the begining but serving the non-consumption market? Classic Christensen case study? Who knows? I like what I am seeing in Twitter ecosystem.

LiveSide’s quote by Ray Ozzie is in some ways defining Twitter’s (accidentally, I doubt they planned it) evolving messaging architecture -

“The operating system as it would be designed for today’s multi-PC, multi-device, work anywhere, web-based world. Enabling you to login using any of your service-based or enterprise identities. Deploying software automatically and as appropriate to all your devices, and roaming application data and settings. Permitting seamless access to storage across all your PCs, devices, servers and the web”

At MessageDance we are obsessed about connecting email messages with emerging cloud architecture in new ways. That includes adhoc store-and-forward transient persistence as well. For example if Twitter goes down ( they have a planned maintenance window later in the evening), you can still use Twitter from MessageDance! If you are using Twitter via MessageDance (more details here), you can configure all your tweets to be stored in MessageDance during Twitter downtime. Next time Twitter comes back online, MessageDance will publish your posts to Twitter. We restore your Twittering experience.

I believe we will see more and more of this model where all API users share the responsibility of ensuring consistent user experience across cloud. Tribler looks very interesting as a startup pursuing this vision.

I love that tool and every time when somebody says - “I don’t get Twitter”, I just chuckle. We announced something big today which is related to Twitter.

With MessageDance now you can send your twitter status from your existing email account. To me the right context to send out my status is when I am reading my emails. I start my day, I check my email, reply some, file some and in the same context I send my status to Twitter and Facebook. That’s how it should have been! Leveraging that context results in real time saving.

Anyways, if you are wondering why MessageDance is jumping on the hype-train then here is a broader vision which MessageDance is pursuing:

At MessageDance, we believe email is the most easy-to-use, widely-adopted and under-utilized tool for the social media engagement. Twitter support extends our lead in providing email broadcast capability to popular social media destinations. Twitter joins MessageDance email network, which includes Facebook, Myspace, Livejournal, Xanga, Wordpress, Blogger and several other social networking sites.

Head over to MessageDance if you want to see social email in action. It’s a start and there are lot of very cool features in the pipeline. If you are enjoying beta program then go for a test drive with Twitter mail. You are welcome to sign-up for beta program if you are hearing MessageDance for the first time.
